Born in El Paso (1937), Ms. Alvarez-Muñoz lives and works in Arlington, Texas. During her three-decade career, Ms. Alvarez-Muñoz has been invited to exhibit and to create site-specific works in over 50 major U.S. museums including New York's Whitney Biennial in 1991.

Stories Your Mother Never Told You consists of two inter-related parts: The first part is a 20 year survey of the artist's career in photography, bookmaking and installation emphasizes the artist's blending of conceptual and narrative probes and her ability to transform Latino/a heritage and storytelling traditions into discourses of broad-based access, ultimately following Ms. Alvarez-Muñoz' objective "to give places back their history." The second part of the exhibition is the result of a residency in San Antonio and is a documentary installation of digitized photographs about the San Antonio Latino Arts Community described below: Presently, there are several generations of artistic chroniclers; those who were brave and motivated to pave the way, and a new generation of artists. Ms. Alvarez-Muñoz is interested in observing if there is an influence of one group to the other, and of discovering the main influences of the first group. Being that every age is signified by the notion of certain groups or Being attentive and respectful to documentary works and processes, Ms. Alvarez-Muñoz is driven to acknowledge the nature of changing phenomenon, the fact that the nature of our current time will quickly phase or morph itself into another. She has seized the moment and captured an existing transitory dynamic.
