When we consolidated our two businesses to open a storefront in 1984, Hank Auderer and I spent many hours determining what name to use. My home-based business "The Copyworks" was primarily copying old photos, shooting slides of artwork and making slide duplicates. But the new lab would do more than that. Hank had been doing business as "River City Silver" processing black and white film and prints for local photographers and companies. Did that name describe what we were to do?
"Dem Chromes" was one name that made allusion to the E-6 line we were adding to our combined services. "Mo Photo" ? "Prints Charming" was already taken and there was already a lab named for the city and one for that shrine of the west located here in San Antonio.
"River City Silver"... It did have a nice ring to it. The San Antonio River, which has its headwaters a few miles from our chosen location has been an attraction for far longer than either the city or the Alamo. Artifacts from 6,000 years ago show evidence of man's appreciation of its continuous, spring-fed, cool-green waters. River City is a well-chosen nickname for San Antonio.
And silver halide is the light-sensitive metal used in photographic films and papers. A precious metal. Sterling in quality. An appropriate symbol of the high quality work we are committed to producing.
So "River City Silver" it remains.
As you can see by browsing this website, we offer most traditional photographic lab services, as well as an ever-expanding line of digital services. As digital technology continues to improve, silver-halide-based materials may be supplanted by dyes and pixels. But our commitment to making high quality images with sterling customer service has not changed.
